Long Term Effects of Marijuana

What are the Long Term Effects of Marijuana?

In the beginning, I'd like to state that the text on this page is not intended to make Marijuana use look harmless, nor do I want to demonize it.

Most sources I read do take position on either one of those sides. The American NIDA (National Institute of Drug Abuse) gives Marijuana the fault for everything bad that happens in a users life. From bad grades until cancer, its all the pots fault. But the users decisions to smoke pot every day and his other life circumstances is what made him like that in the first place.

I think that humans have a need for altering their state of mind. It can be healing to use a drug like Marijuana or Alcohol. But not when its used excessively, of course. People that eat excessively die earlier, too. People that watch too much TV die earlier, too.

Both sides of the equation should be carefully considered.

What are long Term effects of Marijuana?

Long Term effects of Marijuana are the changes caused by Marijuana to its user that can be noticed by the user or his social circle. They can regard his demeanor or his physical body. They appear after a longer period of using Marijuana on a regular basis, at least 3 month.

Physical Body

Changes can include:

  • All lung related diseases, caused by deep inhaling of the smoke
  • Nervousness when not stoned
  • Decreased brain agility. "Walking in a cloud of Fog".
  • Immunity against the drug. User does not get stoned anymore

It is important to differentiate whether a user smokes pot with or without tobacco. Physical addictions are stronger when Marijuana has been smoked together with tobacco.

One physical symptom of withdrawal that I personally had after stopping to smoke pure pot habitually for a longer period (more than three month) was a feeling of unease in my muscles.

Whenever I rested for sleep in the evening, I had slight tense feelings in my muscles. When I than used them, the feelings disappeared but came back after a few seconds. It felt like a very gently cramp.

These symptoms disappeared after 2 - 3 weeks of abstinence.

Less Sperm and Man-Boobs?

This statement popped up regularly on government websites when I searched for information. It has been said, that habitual, frequent users do have a reduced sperm count. They say that is one of the long term effects of Marijuana.

They also are said to have lower testosterone levels. Testosterone is a hormone that mainly regulates a mans manliness.

On the other hand, the website of digitalneuropath.com says: "Despite what many people believe, moderate marijuana use does not change the levels of sex hormones levels such as testosterone". Digitalneuropath seems to reflect opinions of relatively independent doctors or medical practitioners.

Digitalneuropath.com further writes that a study at the University of Iowa found that use of marijuana does not affect the testosterone, luteinizing hormone, follicle stimulating hormone, prolactin and cortisol in men and women.

Reproductive damage from marijuana used by males has not been proven yet. One study did show that there was a relationship between marijuana use and a low sperm count. The sperm count is also increased to normal when the user stops taking marijuana. [link]

Waering tight undies will also reduce a mans sperm count.

Summary

Does the continual use of Marijuana have unwanted long term effect? Sure does. If you smoke pot every day for month, your lungs will suffer. You probably walk around awake but still somewhat asleep. You life is not what it could be.

Maybe you even can't get a boner anymore.

But these things are not the fault of Marijuana. They are the users fault. Why does he need to smoke pot every day?

The person that watches TV all the time will probably suffer from obesity and not be able to concentrate that well.

Everything a person does overly often will probably bring unwanted effects with it. So does Marijuana.

If you smoke Marijuana not more than once a week, you are unlikely to develop these negative symptoms. People that can regulate it like this probably have a healthy life in other areas, too.
